AI Engineer Resume and Interview Guide: Skills to Show
AI engineer resumes work best when they show working AI features you built, how you measured them and how you ran them in production.
Skills hiring teams look for
List the ones you have genuinely used, and put the most relevant to the job first.
- Python and an API or web framework
- Working with LLM APIs and prompt design
- Retrieval-augmented generation and vector search
- Evaluation of model output quality
- Data pipelines and SQL
- Model serving and deployment (Docker, cloud)
- Monitoring cost, latency and quality
- Fine-tuning or classical machine learning where relevant
- Safety, privacy and guardrails
- Clear communication of results to non-technical teams
How to write your experience
- Describe the product problem the AI feature solved and how you measured success.
- Show evaluation work: test sets, quality checks and how you caught bad output.
- Mention cost and latency decisions, which hiring teams care about.
- Only claim tools you have actually used, and be exact about your part in team projects.
Interview topics to prepare
- Designing a retrieval-augmented generation system
- How you evaluate whether an AI feature is good enough to ship
- Reducing hallucinations and handling unsafe output
- Choosing between prompting, retrieval and fine-tuning
- Controlling cost and latency in production
- Protecting user data when using third-party models
Tailor it to each posting
Read the job description, find the required skills, and make sure each one you genuinely have is easy to find in your summary, skills and recent bullets. Do not add skills you have not used. See the guide: how to tailor your resume to a job description, and the ATS resume checklist.
Put this into practice.
