Doctor and Physician CV and Interview Guide: What to Include
Physicians usually use a curriculum vitae (CV) rather than a one-page resume. It should accurately list your education, training, licensure, certifications and clinical experience.
Skills hiring teams look for
List the ones you have genuinely used, and put the most relevant to the job first.
- Medical license and state or country of licensure
- Board certification or eligibility
- Specialty and subspecialty training
- Clinical experience and settings
- Electronic health record systems you have used
- Patient communication
- Teamwork across care teams
- Research, publications and presentations
- Teaching and supervision
- Quality improvement work
How to write your experience
- List education and training in order: medical school, residency, fellowship, with institutions and dates.
- State your licenses and certifications exactly, including their current status.
- Describe clinical experience by setting and patient population, without any patient information.
- Add research, publications, teaching and committee work only if they are real and verifiable.
- Explain any gaps in dates briefly and honestly.
Interview topics to prepare
- Why this specialty and this practice or hospital
- A challenging case you managed, described without identifying the patient
- Working with nurses, colleagues and other teams
- Handling a disagreement or a medical error
- Managing workload, call schedules and burnout
- Your approach to patient communication
Tailor it to each posting
Read the job description, find the required skills, and make sure each one you genuinely have is easy to find in your summary, skills and recent bullets. Do not add skills you have not used. See the guide: how to tailor your resume to a job description, and the ATS resume checklist.
Put this into practice.
