Registered Nurse Resume and Interview Guide
Nursing resumes work best when they make your license, specialty and unit experience easy to find.
Skills hiring teams look for
List the ones you have genuinely used, and put the most relevant to the job first.
- Active license and where it is valid
- Clinical specialty and unit type
- Patient assessment and care planning
- Medication administration
- Documentation and electronic health records
- Patient and family education
- Teamwork and handoff communication
- Safety and infection control
- Certifications you hold
- Handling urgent situations calmly
How to write your experience
- Put your license and certifications near the top, exactly as issued.
- Name your unit types and patient populations without sharing private details.
- Describe teamwork, mentoring or quality work you took part in.
- Never include patient information of any kind.
Interview topics to prepare
- A time you handled a deteriorating patient
- How you prioritize several patients at once
- How you communicate a handoff
- Handling a disagreement with a colleague
- Patient safety and infection control practices
- Why you chose your specialty
Tailor it to each posting
Read the job description, find the required skills, and make sure each one you genuinely have is easy to find in your summary, skills and recent bullets. Do not add skills you have not used. See the guide: how to tailor your resume to a job description, and the ATS resume checklist.
Put this into practice.
JobSahara matches you to jobs, tailors your resume and cover letter to each posting using only what is in your resume, and helps you reply to recruiters.
