Java Developer Resume and Interview Guide: Skills to Show
Java roles often ask for Spring experience, strong fundamentals and production service skills. Your resume should show all three.
Skills hiring teams look for
List the ones you have genuinely used, and put the most relevant to the job first.
- Java 8 to 21
- Spring Boot and Spring Framework
- REST APIs and microservices
- Hibernate / JPA and SQL
- Messaging (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
- Maven or Gradle
- JUnit and Mockito
- Docker and Kubernetes
- CI/CD pipelines
- Cloud (AWS or Azure)
How to write your experience
- Name the Java versions you have used, and the features you rely on (streams, records, concurrency utilities).
- Describe services by scale and responsibility: requests, events, data volumes, ownership.
- Show how you test and release: test coverage approach, pipelines, monitoring.
- Keep unrelated older tools short and put current stack first.
Interview topics to prepare
- Collections, concurrency and the Java memory model
- How Spring dependency injection and transactions work
- JPA lazy loading and the N+1 query problem
- Designing for failure in microservices
- Kafka consumer groups and delivery guarantees
- Garbage collection basics and diagnosing performance
Tailor it to each posting
Read the job description, find the required skills, and make sure each one you genuinely have is easy to find in your summary, skills and recent bullets. Do not add skills you have not used. See the guide: how to tailor your resume to a job description, and the ATS resume checklist.
Put this into practice.
