Software Engineer Resume and Interview Guide: Skills to Show
A software engineer resume should show what you built, the technologies you used and what changed because of your work. Keep it specific, honest and easy to scan.
Skills hiring teams look for
List the ones you have genuinely used, and put the most relevant to the job first.
- One or two main programming languages
- Data structures and algorithms
- Web or API development
- Databases and SQL
- Version control with Git
- Testing and code review
- Cloud basics and CI/CD
- System design fundamentals
- Debugging and troubleshooting
- Communication and teamwork
How to write your experience
- Lead each bullet with what you built or improved, then name the technology used.
- Add numbers only when you can explain them, such as requests served or time saved.
- Show ownership: features you delivered, bugs you fixed, and systems you maintained.
- List projects, internships or open-source work if you are early in your career.
- Match your skills section to the posting, listing only tools you have actually used.
Interview topics to prepare
- Coding problems on data structures and algorithms
- System design and the trade-offs behind your choices
- Object-oriented and low-level design
- Your past projects in detail
- Behavioral questions on teamwork and conflict
- Debugging a problem you faced in production
Tailor it to each posting
Read the job description, find the required skills, and make sure each one you genuinely have is easy to find in your summary, skills and recent bullets. Do not add skills you have not used. See the guide: how to tailor your resume to a job description, and the ATS resume checklist.
